Coastrek: 100km Endurance Event

Coastrek: 100km Endurance Event Photo

6am Friday saw our team of four - Dot, Di, Janet and myself - at the Coastrek start line at Palm Beach ready to walk 100km. Sun, sand, bush tracks, a stunning coastline and, when night fell, the occasional sprinkling of rain and then, with dawn, strong wind gusts along the coastline as we headed south, ensured we experienced the event to its fullest.

We were delighted to see Gabi Hollows en route as she provided support to the three Fred Hollows' teams. Warm, affable and morale boosting, we shared a roadside conversation with her in Kirribilli after midnight just before we crossed the Harbour Bridge; she pulled up an esky to sit with us at the 75km checkpoint at Rose Bay to share tea and hot soup and she was there again when we crossed the finish line.

It was an arduous event - we were all foot weary, sleep deprived and sporting some blisters over the last 30kms. Determination (and some white line fever) saw us push on to reach the 100km mark at Wylies Baths in Coogee. It was a great personal achievement for each of us and, as a team, we never lost our sense of humour and worked together to ensure we crossed the line at the same time. Our official time was 28 hours 43 minutes 20 seconds. We came 10th in the women's event and 31st overall. We were relieved, pleased and excited about what we had achieved.

Our thanks to our fabulous support crew who ensured we were hydrated, well fed, appropriately clothed for the changing weather and expertly able to strap, tape and bandage our ailments along the way. Our achievement is as much theirs as ours as we couldn't have done it without them.

Thank you also to those who supported our team by sponsoring us - it is your contribution that has really made a difference to The Fred Hollows Foundation. We are proud to have raised $6,052.50 which means 242 who are needlessly blind will be able to have their sight restored.

It's not too late to make a donation to our team, We Know The Game, for The Fred Hollows Foundation to aid their vision for a world where no one is needlessly blind, and Indigenous Australians enjoy the same health and life expectancy as other Australians.
